Late Fees

How automatic late fees work and how to configure them.

Domara can automatically apply late fees when rent is overdue. You configure the rules once in Settings, and the system handles the rest.

How to configure late fees

  1. Go to Settings in the sidebar
  2. Find the Late Fees section
  3. Set your preferences:

- Fee type — flat amount (e.g., $50) or percentage of rent (e.g., 5%)

- Fee amount — the dollar amount or percentage

- Grace period — number of days after the due date before the fee applies (default is 5 days)

  1. Save your settings

How it works

When a charge is overdue and the grace period has passed, Domara automatically creates a separate late fee charge on the tenant's account. The tenant sees both the original charge and the late fee on their dashboard.

Tips

  • Check your state laws — most states have caps on late fees (typically 5-10% of rent or a flat maximum)
  • Grace periods are standard — most landlords use 3-5 days
  • Late fees are per-charge — each overdue charge gets its own late fee
  • You can adjust or waive — if a tenant has a good reason for being late, you can manually remove the late fee charge
